Based on The Ten Commandments of Mountain Safety, here are 10 Golden Rules for Mountain climbing.

1. Take at least one companion hiking with you. The ideal number for a hiking party is four.

2. Know your limits. Asses the ability, fitness and experience of the group and choose the right route accordingly.

3. Use a guidebook, or go with somebody who knows the way really well. Also, take a compass and know how to read it.

4. Pack signaling devices for longer hikes and check for the nearest phones and ranger stations. Make sure that at least one person takes a fully charged cell phone.

5. Check the expected weather conditions, going mountain climbing prepared for the worst.

6. Tell someone responsible exactly where you are going hiking and do not deviate from that route. Leave an itinerary with them stating your return date.

7. Walk as fast as the slowest member of your party. Before taking a hiking trip make plans for proper acclimatization and ensure that members of the group are adequately fit.

8. When hiking it is essential never to split up or take different routes, especially in adverse weather conditions.

9. If you get lost or feel unsure about where to go, retrace your steps. Do not continue walking blindly into unknown territory.

10. If an emergency arises or you don’t know what to do, find a sheltered place to protect yourself from the elements and stay put.
