Trying to decide when to go to Namibia depends on where you are going and what you want to do in Namibia. If you are heading for the coastal region you can go year-round, but for other regions it depends on the weather.

When to go to Namibia depends largely on the weather as Namibia experiences marked seasonal variations. Weather is of course unpredictable, therefore it is best to get travel advice for when to go. If you are going to Namibia with the aim of game viewing then go in the winter months, June to October. Winter is drier which makes it easier to spot roaming game in the bushes. The months of April and May are good for overland trips in terms of game viewing because many of the game species produce young at this time.

If you are a birdwatcher then go to Namibia in summer to witness the migratory bird species returning to Namibia for the hot, wet season. The rainy season November to March can be fantastic after showers that bring the desert to springing to life before you.

More specifically, when to go to certain regions of Namibia:

  • Etosha - winter, April to September, less sweltering
  • Namib coast - October to March when it is cooler
  • Windhoek - May to September, drier and cooler
  • Southern Namibia - May to September, avoid hottest time
  • Southern coast - pleasant February to May, avoid August as it is the windy month

The best general time to go to Namibia is over the winter months when it is cooler. So, hire a 4×4 and drive independently in Namibia, or book an overland tour and get going, because it is already October!
