Baphumelele Children’s Home has grown into a place of refuge for over one hundred and fifty children in need, since it was founded in 2001. Baphumelele orphanage serves as a home and place of refuge for orphaned, abandoned, abused or neglected children from the Khayelitsha township community outside of Cape Town.

The children at Baphumelele Children’s Home are cared for by local community members aided by international volunteers. Many of the children at the orphanage were rescued from desertion or hostile living conditions and brought to the community orphanage by police or social workers. Some children spend a few days at Baphumelele orphanage whilst others have been living at the orphanage for years.

This orphanage helps children out of often desperate circumstances common in many of Africa’s townships, providing them with a safe and stable environment. Children that arrive at the Baphumelele orphanage are often in poor physical condition, suffering from malnutrition, serious skin infections, tuberculosis and HIV/Aids.

Volunteers working at the Baphumelele Khayelitsha township orphanage will make a difference, touching the lives of these African children suffering from the debilitating affects of the HIV/Aids epidemic exacerbated by poverty.
