An African Safari is an overland journey, usually by non-Africans to Africa, where you get to watch and experience Africa’s wildlife in their natural environment. Most African safari holidays includes additional elements including meeting Africa’s people, learning about their cultures, sampling their foods, and marvelling at Africa’s unique and diverse terrain.

What many frist-time Africa travellers do not realise however, is that there are many types of African safaris which one can experience. Namely:

  • Self-drive safari - you rent a car/4×4/camper and explore Africa in your own time, choosing the accommodation that suites your style and budget, and choosing which parts of African you wish to explore.
  • Overland safari - you join a group of like-minded travellers for an adventure-filled guided safari through Africa. Your mode of transport is usually a custom-built overland safari truck which can seat between 8 and 24 passengers. These safaris follow a set-schedule and range from 3 days up to 9-weeks. Accommodation is usually camping.
  • Luxury African safari - these safaris involved the same activities as self-drive and overland safaris, but everything you do is in comfort. From the air-conditioned safari vehicles, to the 5-star hotel or tented-camps, to the food and service experienced while on safari. Luxury African safaris are generally for smaller groups, families or couples. They occassionally include special fly-in safari components which allow you to explore some of the less visited areas of Africa.

There are of course, plenty of other activity-based safaris. E.g. golf safaris, diving safaris, hunting safaris, birding safaris, to name a few.

The Africa Travel Guide aims to help you choose your ideal African safari by providing interesting articles, latest news and useful tips on choosing the right type of safari in Africa.

Because self-drive and overland safaris are quite unique, we have assigned separate “categories” in the Africa Travel Guide for these topics. All articles about luxury safaris or activity-based safaris will be posted under the heading Safari.
