Hire a 4×4 in South Africa, Namibia or Botswana and take a drive into the vast Kalahari Desert of Southern Africa.

The Kalahari Desert is made up of a huge sand basin that stretches from the Orange River in South Africa up to Angola, through Namibia and a large part of Botswana. You can drive into this large semi desert area in southern Kgalagadi Africa from South Africa, Botswana or Namibia depending on where you decide to take a drive safari holiday.

The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, a large wildlife conservation area that straddles the border between South Africa and Botswana, is ideal for seeing the spectacular sunsets of the Kalahari Desert. It comprises two adjoining national parks: Kalahari Gemsbok National Park in South Africa and Gemsbok National Park in Botswana, so it is easy to drive to from both countries.

Witness the sand ridges of the fine sand dunes in Namibia, by self-drive in a 4×4 or take a Kalahari Desert tour. You can also experience the Kalahari Desert by driving in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, which is the world’s second largest protected area, and the Khutse Game Reserve in Botswana.

Have a look at this map of Namibia to see the location of the Kalahari Desert within Southern Africa.
