Africa Travel Guide will post regular articles about driving in Africa.
As someone that enjoys a healthy dose of "expect the unexpected", I've always said that the best way to explore Africa is to get into a car and just drive! Without restrictions or rush, you can experience all that Africa has to offer, from endless open roads in the African wilderness to cosy coastal towns along the beautiful and diverse African coastlines.
Our advice: pick-up a good map, rent a car/4x4/motorhome, plan your route and you too can experience the freedom and sense of adventure that driving in Africa gives you!
Our "leader in the field" for the driving in Africa section of Africa Travel Guide is Steve Conradie of Drive South Africa. Steve tells me that he will be contributing plenty of useful information about making sure your self-drive safari in Africa is safe and hassle free.
Drive South Africa offers car rental, 4x4 rental, motorhome rental and a unique concept of vehicle buyback - an affordable alternative for people looking to take a few months out - and would like to buy a car instead of renting one for their Africa self-drive trip.
Welcome on board Steve!

keen to drive for a couple of months around botswana, mozambique, tanzania and kenya - whats the most economic way of doing this? Are there companies that provide vehicles and support? will they allow roaming across all these countries? Mark

Hi Mark,
Yes - you can go through companies like Drive South Africa who offer vehicles for rental (short-term) or buyback (highly recommended for trips of 6 weeks or more).
From what I know, Drive SA offers direct support in South Africa and its neighbouring countries, with indirect support and advice for countries further north. They give advice on routes, road conditions, places to stay, reliable work-shops along the way and common-sense advice for keeping your vehicle (and yourselves!) safe along the trip.
Mark - I do also see that you mention Botswana, Mozambique, Tanzania and Kenya. Any reason you exclude South Africa?
You will probably find that it is easiest to start your trip in South Africa. There are larger companies with more reliable fleets and better support systems in South Africa than in most other countries.
I’d be very interested to hear what your route is and what vehicle you end up travelling in when you do go driving in Africa!
Cheers - Andre
