The Salesian Institute in Green Point, Cape Town, is helping hundreds of street children to reintegrate into society. Their aid programs are aimed at improving the lives of street children, by educating and training them to become self-sufficient.
There are currently 200 disadvantaged youths being trained under the Learn to Live Project at the institute. According to the institute many of these underprivileged youths have ended up on the streets of Cape Town, because they have left dysfunctional homes or their parents have passed away, increasingly due to the HIV/AIDS epidemic in South Africa.
The Learn to Live Project in Cape Town focuses on education and skills training that teaches the street children practical, marketable skills to make them employable and independent. The disadvantaged children are encouraged to use the tools made available at the institute. The items that the street children make are then sold in craft markets in Cape Town. The institute has also recently placed 120 destitute youths in jobs with construction companies in Cape Town.
Get involved and make a difference in Africa by volunteering in South Africa with disadvantaged children in Cape Town. Or join the education volunteer project to volunteer with HIV/AIDS orphans at the St Lucia Orphan Day Care Centre, in KwaZulu Natal.
You could visit the Institute in Cape Town to make a donation or volunteer with the street children project in Cape Town. Another way of making an impact in Africa is to join a volunteer Africa program in another African country, such as Kenya, Botswana or Zimbabwe.
