So, you are heading into the wilderness on a hike and need to know what to take with you. Here is a checklist of 20 things you will need to take along:
- Candle and matches
- Cell phone
- Clothing - warm clothes, extra socks and rain gear
- Map and compass
- First aid kit
- Torch
- Hat
- Insect repellent
- Nylon filament
- Pocket knife
- Pocket mirror or foil to use as a signaling device
- Prescription medications for ongoing medical conditions
- Space blanket or a piece of plastic for warmth or shelter
- Sunglasses
- Sunscreen
- Trash bag - could be used as a poncho
- Extra water and food
- Waterproof matches or matches in a waterproof tin
- Water purification tablets
- Whistle - to scare off animals or to use as a signaling device
And just in case, always expect the worst in terms of the weather and go prepared to spend a night sleeping outside.
