So, you are heading into the wilderness on a hike and need to know what to take with you. Here is a checklist of 20 things you will need to take along:

  1. Candle and matches
  2. Cell phone
  3. Clothing - warm clothes, extra socks and rain gear
  4. Map and compass
  5. First aid kit
  6. Torch
  7. Hat
  8. Insect repellent
  9. Nylon filament
  10. Pocket knife
  11. Pocket mirror or foil to use as a signaling device
  12. Prescription medications for ongoing medical conditions
  13. Space blanket or a piece of plastic for warmth or shelter
  14. Sunglasses
  15. Sunscreen
  16. Trash bag - could be used as a poncho
  17. Extra water and food
  18. Waterproof matches or matches in a waterproof tin
  19. Water purification tablets
  20. Whistle - to scare off animals or to use as a signaling device

And just in case, always expect the worst in terms of the weather and go prepared to spend a night sleeping outside.
