Besides being the editor of the Africa Travel Guide, I am also currently doing my internship in Africa. For those of you thinking about doing an internship in Africa, you should no longer hestitate. You will have the time of your life, trust me!
To get an internship in Africa might seem a very daunting task. But by following a few basic steps you too can arrange that internship you have always wanted in Africa, whether it is working with lions on the savannah or working in a great city like Cape Town.
You could be in Africa in no time, trust me, and climb on top of Table Mountain like me!
Getting an internship in Africa
If you want to get an internship in Africa, first thing you have to do is get permission from your school. It has to fit within your study program, and therefore get into contact with your International Study Department at your school/university.
After you get permission you can start looking for an internship. You should always start of with your own personal network of friends and family. Let them know that you are looking, this way all of the sudden you have a whole network of people looking for an internship in Africa!
Finding an internship in Africa on the internet
Another good place to look is the internet. Here are some useful sites where you can find internships in Africa:
- Monsterboard Work Abroad (Search site for internships)
- Intern Abroad (Search site for internship programs)
- Allinterns (Company that arranges internships in South Africa)
- African Impact (Offering internship programs on volunteering projects)
- Book your flight. And do this as early as possible, to save money.
- Arrange your visum. Check what visa requirements you have by contacting the embassy of the country you are visiting.
- Get Travel/Medical insurance. Make sure you are insured properly, and that you have your insurance papers in English with international contact numbers.
- Arrange accomodation. The company should be able to help you with this, if not look for ads in local papers and hostels near your work place.
- Arrange transportation. Use public transport if that is accesible and safe. If not get a car, either renting or perhaps with a buy-back option.
- Get a mobile. If you are working in a city, it will be very useful to get a mobile phone. For safety reasons, but also to stay in touch with your new friends.
- Enjoy yourself. Most importantly make the most of your time in Africa, and have fun!
