A few decades ago few Mozambicans would have admitted that they
were proudly Mozambican. No thanks to a stormy past, the country has
since been rebuilt to the paradise it once was and a place to be proud of.

There is so much to see and do including island hopping, beautiful beaches
and interesting colonial architecture. Colorful local cultures and the
friendliest people combined with a real African vibe make this one of the most enjoyable countries in Africa.

Known for its great tropical weather, superb white sand beaches, warm
waters, alluring golden sunsets, tall palm trees, huge plates of prawns
and great tasting local beer, Mozambique is the perfect place for sun
bathing, scuba diving, dhow trips, swimming with dolphins or just to
relax, people watch and take in the sights of this African paradise.

With all of this on offer why not make Mozambique your next holiday destination!?

Hi Tanya, I hope you can answer a few questions for me. I’m travelling around Africa doing voluntary work. My schedule is increasing by the day! I know of a whale shark project (scuba)at Tofu for 4 weeks but is quite expensive so I want to see if I can do it on my own. I will be in Tanzania on a project and I’m trying to get to Tofu - Casa Barry and not sure how I can travel there. I beleive there is also a festival in Quelimane also for 21-24 Feb but haven’t much information on it ie is it going on, is it worth it and how do I get there. Can you advise how I can do both? Time wise, I think I will have to go to the festival and then the diving. I would very much appreciate your advice. I would also be looking to go back to Jo’burg via, I hope Swaziland but think this is a tall order. Thank you

Hi Michelle,

Whew! I am not sure what your ultimate itinerary should be as it depends on your time frame but I’ll answer what I can…

The easy (or only) way to Tofu (Tofo Beach) is fly into Maputo, take the bus to Inhambane and a local taxi/transfer/chappa from there. You may find Casa Barry folks will come and pick you up? If the whole package is expensive you could stay at a local, cheaper hostel (there are 2 - Fatima’s or Bamboozles - both with good facilities).

The festival at Quelimane you mention is trickier… so tricky we, with the help of Mozambique Tourism, can not find a single thing about it! It is a very remote place for a festival… let me know if you have any more info about it and I will see what I can find out.

If you decide not to try the festival then you might have time to get to Johannesburg via Swaziland - that is a easy one! :) You can add the volunteering aspect to it if you like!

Good Luck!!
