Long weekend ahead - Yippee! Any idea why Monday is a public holiday in South Africa?
Monday falls on the 24 of September, which is Heritage day in South Africa. Heritage day is also known as National "Braai" (barbecue) Day in South Africa. Earlier this month Desmond Tutu was appointed as the patron of the Braai Day public holiday.
Heritage day in South Africa is a newly formed public holiday on which South Africans get to celebrate our national identity, unique culture and shared historical inheritance.
Heritage day is a public holiday dedicated to the diversity of the peoples of South Africa and to the past struggles of Apartheid. On heritage day many South Africans have a barbecue, because the "braai" is a cross-cultural favourite pastime nationwide.
So, get ready to relax and enjoy the long weekend, not forgetting to end it off with a "lekker braai" (enjoyable barbecue) on Monday.
