The increase in airline collisions over the African skies will be the central topic in a conference held this week, with the objective to improve safety of flights in Africa. During the airline crisis in March of this year, many European countries banned certain African airlines from their airspace, because of a lack of safety protocols. In an attempt to make the African airline industry safer, the "Key to Africa Aviation Conference on Safety and Security" will be held in Abuja, Nigeria. Most of the crashes and accidents so far have occured in Nigeria, where 225 people died late last year in two crashes. The cause of most crashes are mechanical problems, since most planes are old passenger planes, especially from the old Soviet Union. Therefore, Nigeria has given Key to Africa a mandate to gather all stakeholders involved in African aviation and discuss safety of flights in africa. Key to Africa is an organisation that helps organise African conferences and hopes to solve the continent's issues to ensure improved performance. The first chairperson of the organisation is Zambia's president, Kenneth Kaunda. View the full IOL article.
