Get your catch of the day sustainably by checking the seafood consumer chart for Southern Africa. The Southern African Sustainable Seafood Initiative (SASSI) provides consumer guidelines on which species have healthy populations and which species should be avoided:

This chart makes it easy for you to make informed decisions and enjoy seafood across South Africa without worrying about overfishing and eating endangered species.

You can download a pocket guide to stick on your fridge or carry with you.

SASSI says - Exercise your rights as a consumer by insisting on more information about the seafood that you buy:

1. Ask questions:

•Where does your seafood come from?

    •How was it caught?

    •What species is it?

2. Look out for species on the Red list:

•Avoid buying and eating species from the red list.

•Tell the restaurant manager or dealer that the species is on the red list.

3. If you have a choice, choose a species from the Green list:

•Good choices are Hake, Yellowtail, Snoek, Dorado and Calamari.

•Do not buy Musselcracker or Steenbras.

•Tell the seafood retailer WHY you are choosing a particular species over another.

As you can see, you don’t have to stop eating delicious seafood or feel guilty about depleting fish stocks, if you follow the seafood guidelines and choose to travel green and eat sensibly.
