The Spier Performing Arts Festival in Cape Town ends this Sunday, 2 March 2008. This arts festival is one of a series of Spier Arts Festivals produced by the Africa Centre in South Africa.
The other two Spier Wine Estate Arts Festivals are the Poetry Exchange and African Music Festivals. The objectives of the arts festivals include that of delivering innovative and outstanding performing arts, as well as showcasing and promoting emerging South African artists. The arts festivals aim to provide opportunities for collaboration with Pan-African artists bringing performing arts to new audiences.
The Performing Arts Festival held from February 26 to March 2 is accompanied by a series of public workshops designed by theatre veteran Liz Mills. Performers, designers and performance makers are invited to attend these public workshops by leading South African experts in theatre-production, design, dance and vocal performance.
The Africa Centre understands that the generating new ideas and approaches is essential to the development of performance art that resonates with the complexities of contemporary living.
The Spier Performing Arts Festival previously held at the Spier Wine Estate in Stellenbosch is being held in the inner-city of Cape Town this year and curated by Brett Bailey and Jay Pather. This Spier Arts Festival places emphasis on developing original works and re-staging pieces outside of the customary performance arenas.
The Africa Centre aims to become a major international organisation celebrating both the visual and performance art heritage of Africa. The Africa Centre objectives include formulating innovative models for presenting, debating and encouraging the production of art and providing access to the work and ideas of past and current African artists.
